About Us

Tocamos is Tallahassee’s own Afro-Cuban drumming group. The group is led by Yazid Johnson and Paul Harvey.

As a group of community educators, Tocamos strives to educate and entertain. These performances and classes are meant to exemplify the history and culture of the Caribbean and the African Diaspora in an engaging and energetic atmosphere.

The drum is the focal point and serves various functions, such as a voice, telling the story of the dance or a signal to bring the community together.

Tocamos plays Latin dance grooves as well as traditional folk songs from Cuba, Brazil, and Puerto Rico, as well as traditional African rhythms and instruments. In fact, Paul and Yazid co-directed the African Drum and Dance Ensemble at Florida State University from 2001 - 2003.

Tocamos performs at an eclectic range of venues. Since many members are music educators, the group puts a high priority on playing for public and private schools, other events and benefits, and workshops that include children and young people. Other performances to date include weddings, community festivals, various club performances, and even an 80th birthday party for one of our most adoring fans.
